Statistically speaking, given his age and health issues, McCain is the most likely person of the last several decades to, God forbid, possible pass-away in office. Unemotionally, that's a real possibility when it comes to picking the Leader of the Free World and as such, McCain would have done the country a much better service to have picked someone like Mitt Romney, or Tom Ridge, or even better from a female-voter perspective, Condi Rice. Condi's background and in-the-trenches experience would've made possibly a terrific President, if the need came for it.

They way we have bungled our economy in the last 8 years has destabilized the economies of the world over because the US dollar replaced the gold standard in most industrialized countries after WW2. And last I checked, the Euro was outstripping the US dollar in value by 2 to 1 if not more. Moreover, europeans have higher gas prices because most of the gas money goes directly back to the european citizen through excellent modern public transportation. It has always been that way. That's why Europe currently actually has clean air.

The US congress has not had a *working* democratic majority for the last 2 years that can override Presidential vetoes. That's why nothing has been done -because the Republicans are still in charge and still following the failed policies of the last 8 years.

Before you brag about your "foreign" knowledge, try brushing yourself up on US politics, history, and public policy first. I've lived in Alaska for the last 20 years. We've seen our share of good and bad--especially bad given the politics of late. As far as politicians go, Palin has been a fairly good governor in trying times. THAT does not make her a good candidate for VP. I was shocked, surprised and amazed by McCain's choice which I personally think was nothing more than a desperate attempt to take the thunder away from Obama's Thursday night acceptance speech. I guess he succeeded.

Having been a fence-sitter, seeing Obama's speech gave me more hope for this country than I've had in years. He's blasted for big ideas. Good. At least he has the guts to stand there and speak of that hope. All-inclusive, powerful, and leadership. I'm sure I'm not the only one that moved off the fence that night. Obama's the closest candidate who resembles a statesman that we've had in decades. I look forward to seeing a new direction. We know (or is that "no") what we'll get with McCain/Palin.

McCain's pick illustrates his conviction, or lack thereof, to the country. He is willing to do anything to get elected, even leave the country with a second in command who has absolutely no experience. Obama picked a VP with a wealth of experience who unquestionably could be President.

What does it say about us that this is seen as a positive? For over a year Sen. Obama was put through the ringer by the Republicans/media for questions of his experience. We have been seeing what Washington insiders cannot do to make things happen. So far nothing seems to get done. There is a lot of blustering about what needs to be done. Why not bring in an insider. Someone to shake up things. Look at what our Congress is doing right now -- sitting out on vacation doing nothing. They try to put bandaids on the problems or throw more of our money on problems but in the end the problem is still there. Ten years ago they said it will take 10 years for any drilling to have any effect on prices here. Guess what? Ten years have passed and the fact that no drilling occurred has had an effect on prices -- they rose. And no alternatives were developed.

Some new faces have to come in there and shake the status quo up really hard!! This may be the start. There are alot of Senators up for election (1/3 I do believe), there is another place to look to inject new thinking and blood. And every Rep is up for re-election, so make then listen to what we what, not what the Democratic or Republican party tells you it wants.

If you are going to consider your children this election watch McCain in a question/answer session from a few weeks back. A woman wondered how we could possibly fight 2 wars and find Bin Laden without reinstituting the draft. McWar said that he couldn't agree more. I highly doubt Congress would ever accept bringing back the draft, but just knowing that McWar-milking-my-POW-situation has the mindset that a draft is a great idea scared the heck out me. I have 3 children and my oldest will be 19 in 9 years. I certainly don't want him near the White House for the next 8 years!

Lastly, not voting at all would be a disservice to every single suffrogette that sacrificed much to get us the right to vote 88 years ago. It is nearly impossible to agree with any candidate 100% of the time. You need to find someone who can lead by surrounding himself with intelligence and non "yes" men. Lincoln had both parties represented in his cabinet so he could hear all sides of opinions, for example. Bush can't tolerate anyone who doesn't agree with him would be another example. Presidents do not have magic wands so they need to work with everyone to find common ground. Barack made some examples last night when he said that we can't all agree about abortion but we can all agree that we need to cut down on unwanted pregnancies. We don't all agree on gun control but we can certainly understand not having machine guns in the wrong hands. He has shown he has a capacity to understand other's points of view and will work together to find solutions.

However, you also should read American papers and research further what has happened to this country in the past 8 years. Obviously, if you think the Dems are ready to give away the store, you are not listening closely to what is being said. It is unfortunate if we vote to continue on the negative path. If we love our country as much as a lot of us pretend to, we will start today trying to pull it off of the distructive path it is on. Your argument about "yes" men deserves to be answered. It seems to me Senator Obama has surrounded himself with a cadre of people who can do nothing but cowtow to him and his enormous ego and do all they can to smooth over his already famous rancour for anything negative said about himself, his past actions or his wife's now infamous remarks about this country. No one is allowed to question his record without instant reprisals from the Senator himself or his army of backers.
He hasn't had enough time in the Senate to work together with either party to find solutions or pass any bills or even back any bills because he has been grooming himself for his big run for POTUS.
Reading the newspapers online will keep you up-to-date on current statistics. The DNC talking points are dated and don't use current numbers. Abortions are down to a 10 year low. Automatic handguns have been outlawed for years! The people buying "machine guns" are purchasing them illegally anyway, so no law passed will stop them.
Presidents do not make law in this country. George Bush and his administration have run into Democrat logjams for the last 8 years that have not allowed for progress. The No Child Left Behind Act was Ted Kennedy's brain child and it has progressively destroyed public education for the last 8 years by establishing testing standards that dumb down a whole population of students so others can catch up to them.
The last 2 years of a failed Congress and Senate show how ineffective the Democrat party have become unless they want to have hearings on the widespread use of steroids in major league baseball! What a tremendous waste of money and time! Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are embarrassments to this country because of their personal agendas! And Pelosi's recent personal investment in T. Boone Picken's energy plan (to the tune of $200k) that involves natural gas pipelines will show which way she directs votes when the House reconvenes and it won't be for offshore drilling.
So, yes, I pay attention and NO, I won't vote for any Democrats this voting cycle!

Beverly must be reading islamic papers because the papers I read daily never mention animosity toward the USA nor do any of the comments posted by their readers. They do print articles on our election process and have poked fun at Obama's Grand Tour of Europe and his appearance last night in Denver on a stage set " like a Greek tragedy"! A majority of the comments I read pity our country if Obama is elected president.
I read not only our national papers but many local papers. Among the foreign papers, the people of Guatemala feel that the illegals here are treated more harshly because their president met with Hugo Chavez to negotiate lower oil prices for the country. Maybe if they read our papers they would know illegals aren't wanted here by most U.S. residents because they drain resources that could be used for legitimate citizens. Immigration to this country should be pursued through the appropriate laws, not by dodging the Border Patrol! I have wondered why the Obama campaign hasn't openly addressed immigration?
We all know McCain's stance on immigration and while we all don't agree with it, we know Congress and the Senate stand between him and lawmaking.
And to answer the smart ass above, I don't have a household income of 5 million, I have one home, I have 5 children, 3 who would be eligible to be drafted in the next 3 years, I have a son-in-law in the Army and I am no elitist!
I prefer to decide where to spend my own money and would prefer if everyone else would get jobs and pay for their own health insurance, just like my husband and I do! I don't need the government to tell me I should pay for someone else's kids when I support my own! One thing we Do know is that she is Gov. of Alaska. Another thing we do know is that the top item on the GOP platform is : "Drill here; Drill now; Pay less." And a third thing we know is that the Grand Oil Party wants ANWAR. The Republicans are going to run on a platform fueled by oil, and claiming that spoiling one of the few pristine areas left is worth 2 years of oil (which we MIGHT realize in about 10 years if we are lucky). Given that there are leased fields which haven't been tapped yet and that we do not have the refinery capacity to handle what we bring up now, they may have made a big mistake by putting so much weight on the issue of domestic drilling.

I think it also shows that they are scared. Palin is young, pro-life, a woman, and unknown by most Americans and the media. McCain may hope she will balance the ticket, but I don't think it will pay off for him. Women voters aren't naive, they know a token position when they see it. Those who are worried about McCain's age and were hoping for a younger back-up aren't likely to be reassured by her. And some may wonder just how close the ties are between the Gov. and Sen. Stevens. My guess is that there aren't any really close ties there, but given how easily pundits link far less tangibles to Obama, who knows.

Bottom line, I don't think this will help McCain's chances. Obama-Biden will get the win in November.

Yes, that's a great plan, let's decrease our dependence on foreign oil by using up all our own! NOT such a great plan. It's only a quick-fix to try to get votes in Washington. We need to decrease our dependence on all oil whether it is foreign or not. Oil is not renewable people... we need to start investing in other forms of energy. And I'm not just talking about building up nuclear. We've been there, done that. We need something new and there are a lot of talented scientists working on developing new ways of generating energy but lack funding because of BIG OIL. The only one who cares to be green is OBAMA. Pristine does not imply pretty. Barren land is only barren if you think you can make a profit on it in some way. That figure is correct only if one assumes that the United States would be relying solely on ANWR for its oil production. ANWR may contain up to 16 billion barrels of oil, of which about 11 billion is accessible from federally owned (non-Native) lands. A large number of wildlife refuges already have drilling installations, and there are numerous methods to harness the oil resources while leaving a minimal impact on the environment. But even if we ignore ANWR, US oil reserves are massive. The Department of the Interior estimates that we have close to 134 billion barrels of undiscovered oil reserves in this country, of which over 80 billion could be found on the continental shelf. We must attain energy independence, and we have the resources to do so. Biofuels are great, but they have distinct downsides - number one of which is that they gobble up food crops and hurt agriculture. We have yet to see anything close to viable production of better biofuels like algae. Solar and wind technologies are simply too expensive and unproductive so far. For the time being, oil is our best energy source, and the most easily accessible. Concerning Palin, let me say that she does NOT seem to be in the pocket of big oil - she is strongly independent of the big oil companies, and has done a lot of work to help protect the climate and environment in Alaska. Also, if you do some research you will note that her approval rating has been as high as 90% more often than not. For the Republicans out there, she is strong in many areas you care about: she's pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, pro-gun ownership. But she is also very progressive in a number of other areas. I think she is an excellent choice for Senator McCain, and I predict that she and McCain will certainly win the White House in November. Also, the way things are looking, I can also say that you will certainly not see four more years of Bush-Cheney if they are elected (thank goodness!) There are a load of differences.

McCain is against drilling in AMWAR and Obama is for it.

1. McCain does not fully support drilling in ANWAR, but the Republican Party does, and McCain supports other domestic drilling.
2. Obama only recently changed his platform on domestic drilling, when he realized that this "Alternative Green Energy" was a myth.
3. Florida wont let the U.S. drill off it's coast, but China is drilling hundred's of wells off Florida's coast just inside international waters.

How is she more qualified? Obama has a B.A. in International affairs, a J.D. from Harvard law. He was a professor of constituitional law at the University of Chicago. He served 10 yrs as a state sen. and 4 yrs as a U.S. senator. He likes to listen to broad perspectives, surround himelf with smart diverse, differing opnions. She served as a mayor of a town with pop 7,500, and then Gov. of alaska pop 700,000 for 18 months. I am an independent, but this VP choice is not only scary but reckless. It may be good politics, but not good for the country. The general is correct, and truly cares about this country which is why he is voting the way he is. As a doctor, I can tell you melanoma is one of the worst cancers to have. I hope if somehow Mccain wins, he doesnt fall ill, for the good of the country. God help us. The first critical characteristic of a president must be his ability to make good decisions and have excellent judgment. I think Elizabeth is right. I also think that McCain has shot himself in the foot in other ways.

1. He chose someone that represents big oil and will connect him even more strongly to the accusation that he is in big oil's pocket. This could prove especially damaging as gas goes up due to winter demand and storms in the Gulf of Mexico.

2. McCain will either be seen as pandering or flip-flopping on his promise to put in someone experienced and ready to lead if he is unable (and possibly both).

3. Her statement that she does not know what the job entails, combined with her history in pageants, makes her appear as the token woman to placate women voters (which is in fact insulting).

4. As comments above suggest. McCain's choice of a young, beauty queen reminds voters of McCain's history of cheating on his wife Carol and then divorcing her to marry his mistress, Cindy (one month after the divorce).

5. The fact that she is currently under investigation for ethics violations will not only make her appear less trustworthy, but will also serve as a reminder of the current administration's ethics violations (the last thing he needs is to be further linked to the Bush administration).

6. She doesn't project a strong enough personality to reassure voters that she can provide balance and a calming effect to McCain's famously severe (and occasionally violent-see Dole's trip) temper.

I really feel John McCain thinks women are just so stupid to think that because he picked a woman to be VP that he will get a large amount of the Hilliary Clinton supporters. I would like someone to state JUST WHAT IS IT THAT HILLARY HAS DONE to be credited with being experienced and accomplished? She is nothing but smoke and mirrors like Bill. She likes to claim that she brought jobs to NY, but the reality is those jobs went over seas. In one instance she help a faltering company expand its workforce by about 300 people and claimed, "...I've brought employment to more New Yorkers". But the reality is, these jobs were filled by foreign workers from India. Everyone of the "newly employed" was also a new immigrant. Now I don't have issues with LEGAL immigrants, but did this create any jobs for existing US citizens??? NO, IT DIDN'T!

Obama was an Illinois State Senator for 8 years. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in Nov. 2004, that's quite a bit longer than 150 days. If you want to compare the two, at least get it right.

It seems to me that the political arena, over the last decade at least, has somehow turned into a political playground of "either your for us or your against" bully tactics and oneupmanship that has caused political parties to swing either so far to the right or to the left of issues that they have forgotten that the middle ground is usually more often than not the higher ground on which to walk.

That is why i choose to be indy- not because i'm wishy washy but because i think am like most of those "average" people out there DEM or REP. In truth, we have the same beliefs on many issues and, deep down, want the same things-value and reform in areas of health, education, economics,etc. (The Minneapolis Star Tribune says so today anyway) and i believe that.
