I never saw Mc Cain look at Obama through the whole debate, but Obama looked at McCain. Why is that?
It's probably the Larry Sinclair thing.
Obama is comfortable with men... especially intimately.
You ought to behave. "Where argument fails, vulgarism prevails." You are proving that.
Poorah Goy - Inappropriate, arrogant, and ignorant. To attempt to denigrate a respectful performance by a married United States Senator by implying that he is homosexual, and in turn is somehow less of a person for it, is offensive and uneducated. Your sallow foolishness has driven American ideals of equality, freedom, and acceptance into the ground. You should be ashamed to post such ridiculous statements here and withhold ever calling yourself a true American.
Poorah, you must be one of those Larry Craig republican kind of he-men. Keep out of my stall
Why does it always come down to the penis and whose possibly putting theirs where with you "conservative" gay-bashers? Guess what, Poorah - most of us DON'T CARE about the sexual preferences of our fellow Americans. We just want a fair shake and a chance to pay our bills, take care of our families and have a few bucks left over at the end of the month. You know ... the kind of lifestyle the grossly wealthy have enjoyed for the past eight years while the rest of us live paycheck to paycheck.
McCain was usually addressing the moderator rather than the "audience" (i.e. the camera) or his opponent. I think of it along the same lines of a student who, while giving a presentation to the class, only addresses the teacher and doesn't make eye contact with anyone else in the room.
Just a case of poor engagement.
Because none of us can stand looking at HUSSEIN Obama. I'm so sick of his voice & face on the news. I'm so ready to vote & make sure he never gets to sit in the oval office EVER!
That bothers me intensely as well...I don't know if McCain was unable to focus if he saw Obama, or if he knew he was beat and could not look Obama in the eye and accept defeat. I do know, however, that I would like our Commander in Chief to not be so intimidated by those that disagree with him that he will look away. Such a disappointment, especially from a former POW.
That's great Poorah Guy, accuse your opponents of being gay. When you graduate from the third grade you might have to support your positions with a little more than that.
People afraid to look other people in the eye are usually lying and the guilt of it being discerned by the other person's eyes are to heavy to bear. McCain knows what he was saying wasn't the full truth, but Barrack gave a straight story and was comfortable to tell it to McCain to his face. I think the American people picked up on that.

If we are to go by body language, if you can't look the man in the eye about whom you are talking, you are lying. McCain just looked like a grumpy old man. McCain did not appear to be listening to Obama's responses closely, but rather heard a few words then jotted down his queued talking point/sound-byte/catch-phrase.
To Poorah: If you're incapable of engaging in serious discussion, you should get back to lurking in the shadows of the adult newsgroups and chat rooms where you're most comfortable.
I noticed that too. McCain calls himself a "patriot", yet he acts very disrespectfully towards the next Commander In Chief. Maybe it's because he is intimidated. Either way, eye contact or not, McCain was to put it mildly, EMBARASSED tonight, and on nearly every issue. Obama had the crown cracking up! McCain was clearly agitated. He's gonna lose his cool before this thing is over. On second thought, it IS over.
OBAMA/BIDEN '08
Perhaps physical trauma and harm from having served his nation, unfortunately as a POW, may have had a cause too. With all the HDTV I'm sure everyone witnessed the facial scars. In fact, it was brought up about McCain's physical capacity. Obama was good and on key, yet vague I expected more from the eloquent orator. McCain was like a young buck, fighting back. McCain needs to make a better case. FYI, Reagan was similar. In all, a push. Fact is that you will stand by your choice and coerce others to jump on board. If you want change, start with yourself and tell your representatives to give back the money we gave them.
The reason McCain can't look Obama in the eye is because McCain does not know if he is really telling the truth. Check the facts - - you will find that Obama is right on! One interesting point is that when you tell the truth, you dont have to have a memory.
That was the worse thing - McCain not looking at Obama. Several times Obama replied directly to McCain and tried to engage him - McCain is like a robot. Is McCain going to go talk... or not talk, from what I understand... to foreign dignitaries and start at the wall while he tries to communicate? Does he have a personality disorder? It was creepy!!
Obama is the clear winner - he's going to listen and communicate. He doesn't come with preconceived ideas - he won't get us into a load of new problems like this past administration has. McCain has outdated foreign policies and politics. It's time to move with the times - that's the only way to fix our economy, too!
I listened to John McCain sign constantly and only talk about the past. His mind is stuck on war. He doesn't seem to care about what's going on with the rest of us.
Barack Obama held his own and stood toe to toe with John McCain.
I noticed this too. He was carefully studying his paper the whole time whenever Obama talked. Meanwhile Obama was ON CAMERA looking at McCain the whole time he was talking.
This body language did not look good for Obama, he looked uncertain because of it at the level of body language.
Because Obama looks up to McCain and know he would make a much better leader for our country. McCain does not respect Obama's leadership skills or lack there of.
I believe that your comment is of no value FamilyforMcCain. It is very obvious that you hold a biased and prejudice view of Senator Obama, while at the same time you fail to take even but a few moments to give him a fair evaluation based on his proposals. That kind of thinking will lead the country to it's destruction. Good thing for everyone else, you won't be making the final decision!
Eye contact ? That is the best criticism you can levy?
I counted at least a dozen times Obama said "John is right".
In terms of scoring a debate conceding a point, many points is what matters.
A lie since you posted your comment before the debate was even over...guess you can predict the future
The reason John McCain did not look at Obama is because he is arrogant and thinks that everyone else is beneath him.
Also, McCain is intimidated of Obama; that is why he stalled on going to the debate. McCain is not worried about the average American he rushed back to the White House to help preserve his wealth and his wife's wealth that is tied up in Wall Street.
would you not rush back if all of your money was going down the drain?
He was ready to put the state of Mississippi in a financial hole for hosting the debate; is that a concern for unwealthy Americans?
Also, why is his wife still wearing those 10K outfits and people cannot make mortgage payments?
gabriel - Obama wasn't conceding points, he's not going to disagree just to be a jerk. Obama was very clear about his plans and they are the best for America. Obama was gracious to McCain - stating he was right on occasion because they agree on some issues. Obama plays well with others and doesn't run with scissors - unlike warmonger McCain. And, NO, scoring points isn't the goal here. Even though it is a debate this is what's best for America not a freakin' sporting event... only a neanderthal would think something that stupid, oh... or a Republican.
I can say, you are right, Obama said you are right, however Obama clarified each part of the statement... Obama didn't blanketly say You are right... more to the point, John you are right you are an old man who really only cares about Regan and war... You are right; we did try trickle down... remind me how successful that was.....
McCain cleaned Barack's clock tonight hands down.
game over Obamination...
Frankly, I don't understand the homosexual reference. It was clear that McCain didn't look at Obama. I don't like Obama, but McCain should have looked directly at him and said the word "you". Obama won this debate hands down. It doesn't matter how experienced you are if you don't have the nerve to face your opponent.
McCain, look at the man, get rid of the silly smirk, interrupt a bit, show me that you have some nerve by being forceful and, for goodness sake, quit belittling the man. He's a competent opponent and should not be underestimated.
Because McCain appealed to the sensibilities of the general public, while Obama needed to absorb pointers on how to get votes; so he watched the master in action.
There is a simple reason McCain refused to look at Obama. He was coached not to, because the audience would acknowledge the obvious, that McCain has to look up to Obama because of the significant difference in height. There are too many psychological studies that point to a subconscious association with height = leadership and virility, something McCain would have to give up by looking towards his taller opponent.
Remember, just about every president in the last fifty years has been taller then their unsuccessful opponent from the other party...
John McCain has no respect for Barack Obama. I do not understand where that disrespect comes from but it is definitely there. Barack got more votes in the democratic primary than John McCain got in the republican primaries. Lots more votes. So that means to me that by showing such profound disdain and arrogance towards Mr. Obama he must also disrespect a majority of American voters.
I am surprised to see that we (my household) are not the only ones to notice how condescending John McCain was toward Barack Obama. That's why most polls favor Obama.
Lehrer wanted them to look at each other, because going face-to-face makes for a more heated debate- an argument between two people. But a debate forum is not a boxing ring. It's a neutral setting to state your ideas and simply respond to your opponent's ideas. John McCain wasn't going to be pulled into a fight. Good for him. Isn't anyone else out there tired of the screaming and yelling? I know I am. I appreciate that, for the most part, both candidates kept their cool. It made me feel a lot more comfortable with both of them.
Honestly I can only come up with one reason and that is because McCain doesn't like Obama. Whether that is because they disagree on politics or there is some other, more personal, less "honorable" reason for McCain to be so rude is unclear. It was completely UNAMERICAN, rude, condescending and arrogant, I can assure you of that. I have heard pundits all evening mention that obviously McCain doesn't like Obama...now why is that?!?!?! He seems like a very likable fellow! I wouldn't mind having a cup of coffee with the guy and learning more about his experiences and sharing mine. It's time for civility among our elected officials, not more of this elitist entitlement behavior so obvious among many of these out-of-touch-with-the-world, good 'ol boy old farts. Don't you agree?
Maybe Senator McCain wasn't looking at Senator Obama because he doesn't like him. They have vastly different visions of where the country should be, how we should accomplish our goals, and what experience is needed to run the country. I think that Senator Obama was as rude in a more subtle way - calling Senator McCain "John" the whole debate and interrupting Senator McCain while he was speaking. Both men don't like their opponent; Senator McCain was just more obvious with his feelings.
I HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THIS BECAUSE OBAMA LOOKED AT MCCAIN AND DID NOT GO BALLISTIC... IS MCCAIN NOT ABLE TO DO THE SAME... I AM PRETTY SURE HE HAD TO SHOW MORE COMPOSURE WHILE BEING A POW. I AM REMINDED OF A 5 YEAR OLD WHEN I WATCH HIM IN THIS DEBATE. THEN CHECK THE FACTS BEHIND MANY OF MCCAINS STATEMENTS BOTH DURING AND EVEN BEFORE THE DEBATE. OR THE START OF HIS COMMERCIAL THAT AIRED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE DEBATE AND STARTED WITH I APPROVED THIS MESSAGE AND THERE IS NO WAY HE COULD HAVE SEEN THE VIDEO BEFORE IT AIRED...
ARROGANT AND BOLDFACED LIAR!!!!!!!!!
ProudAmerican,
the good news is you coud discuss all of Obamas experience in foreign policy over a cup of coffee.
Better make that a Tall, not Grande, definately not Vente.
Sorry, Obama supporters, this is how politics work. Your golden boy blew this big time.
Any mature human would rather have McCain represent them than the stuttering, uncool Obama. The next debates will further ridicule and expose the weaknesses of Obama.
Obama folks, do you seriously think he still has a chance?
The power will prevail. Obama exposed himself as the joke that he is.
I am only hoping that our counry is as intelligent as most beleve it is.
McCain doesn't need to look at Obama, he knows what is standing next to him. A do nothing Senator from Illinois who talks big and has done little (Obama). McCain has much more experience than Obama and has really done what he talks about. Obabma just talks, and I was brought up to believe that actions speak louder than words. Obama just speaks words, he will never do any of what he says. McCain has actions and will lead us out of the mess we are in now. Don't get taken in by Obama's words. He is a great speaker just like another man in history who's countrymen believed him, his name was Hitler.
McCain has experience, extreme knowledge, of being in the trenches. Why would he need to look at Obama?!? McCain was answering questions to and for the public. McCain beat Obama hands down in my opinion-and if you all have read the Bible or even Nostradamus' predictions, Obama is the anti-christ! We need to be extrememly careful of this Obama!
I think that McCain is only saying what you want to here. Not being able to look your opponent in the face in my opinion shows that you are intimidated, nervous or worried. Which leads me to believe that you will be weak as a president. Obama was able to face him and was calm doing the whole thing. Which would lead me to believe that in a time of crisis he isn't going to "bailout".
Close your eyes, and look at what changes need to be made, see which is the best candidate....Then VOTE.
Obama would love to be as experienced as McCain.
That's why he's always looking at him.
It's jealousy.
Proud American In Michigan - I'm sorry you think John McCain - a POW and someone who has worked for reform in our country for longer than I've been alive is Unamerican. What do you define as American? I think Americans are people who stand up for what they believe and work against what they see as wrong. I may want to have a cup of coffee with Obama - he comes across as a nice guy but I'd rather have McCain leading our country.
McCain didn't need to give Obama the time of day. I'm glad he didn't look him in the eye. Although I think it would be nice for him to do it when he slam dunks him on his liberal policies and voting record!
Could it be that he knew he was not being straight forward or honest many of the times and therefore could not face Obama because he's embarrassed for lying about his many inconsistent positions.
I agree. That was because he was ashamed of himself, can't look Obama in the eye, nor the American public. Poor eye contact usually means you're lying, have something up your sleeve, or ashamed of yourself.
When a person does not have the respect to look at his opponent it means he knows he's not tough enough to defeat his opponent. Therefore he hides his pride and fear by facing down when answering questions towards the other person. It shows a low confidence of ones lack of judgement and knowledge. Besides, the media has been saying that McCain dislike Obama personally. Now, I don't know if that's because they're running campaign against each other or because McCain simply just doesn't like someone only because they are not aside with his views just as Palin doesn't like someone personally if their views are different from hers. I think as a president you should be able to put aside your dislikes and be able to join friendship with someone even if that means both of you are consider opponents. It just shows McCain's lack of open mindedness and that he has no respect for other pple's different views other than his own. At least Obama is calm, respectful, and charismatic.
The reason why McCain didn't look Obama in the eye it's simply this...he was afraid of him!
I've noticed this of McCain sometime after that religious forum he was trying to get off that stage as fast as he could! If you ever see the video tape of it you'll see what I mean!
McCain is a liar. I think he didn't look Obama in the eye because he doesn't like Obama. Guess what, Obama doesn't like you either but who cares? This isn't popularity, it's proving you can debate issues and disagree but still be respectful. I was unimpressed with McCain who brags all the time about "reaching across the aisle" and he can't even be respectful of his opponent. McCain is too risky, very cocky like Bush and I don't trust him anymore. I won't be voting for him, that's for sure.
Just because Obama starts some of his sentences with "John is right" does not imply that McCain is more knowledgeable. It merely states that in that particular area Obama has the same opinion as McCain. So stop reaching for excuses and face the fact that Obama is much more qualified for what needs to get done to change our country. McCain is Bush Jr. and we all know how well that has worked.
McCain couldn't look at Obama because McC has temper control problems - and he makes every battle personal. I'm sure he was coached not to look at Obama so that he could keep his temper in check. Which he did, sort of. No to letting McC have his angry little fingers on the red button !
What an amateurish network.
NBC is SO in the tank for Obama...if he loses...with all the media behind him...it will be the biggest loss ever.
When you are speaking to someone, how awkward would it be for someone not to look or acknowledge your presence. Obama had every right to be there after getting over 18million votes. To see McCain not even respect a fellow American to look at him even once showed what type of person he was and what type of person he would be as president.
McCain was angry, contemptuous, and even lied as he looked away from both Jim and Obama. They debunked many of his statements as soon as the debate was over.
So what was McCain's body language indicative of: the fact that he knew he was lying or the fact that maybe he didn't believe Obama didn't have the "right" on the stage with him.
You read between the lines, I'm sure everyone in Old Miss could.
Not looking a person in the eye is typically a sign of guilt, fear, or hatred. I think McCain possesses all three when it comes to Obama. He sees Obama not as JUST a worthy opponent but everything he is against.
Not looking at a person is an attempt to diminish the other persons worth...to make them feel "less than" -- as if they are invisible or don't belong. Sometimes it works.
NOT THIS TIME JOHNNY BOY!!!
Obama knows who he is. You can't diminish him. He's got more class, dignity and intelligence in his little finger than you have in your whole stumpy little body.
McCain can't look at his opponent in the eye? How will he deal with Putin, the president of Iran (who he can't pronounce) or members of Congress who disagree with him? This is not reaching out across party lines. This is not the leadership we need!
Because McCain is an arrogant and full of himself type of person. A person who cannot look someone in the eye during a debate or otherwise, is unable to communicate truthfully or with any real confidence. McCain hides his weakness and inability to be a true leader by failing miserably in not looking his opponent in the eye. McCain uses this as a means to not give any credibility to Senator Obama! McCain hides behind Palin as well! It is beyond belief that anyone would vote for these two inept people!
There is an old saying: "Never trust a person who will not look you in the eye" while conversing with you or in this case, having a debate!!
Linda Tyrie
Because McCain has no neck! *badumbum* JOKE! NON PARTISAN JOKE!
I agree. McCain was very disrespectful of Sen. Obama. While Obama was cavalier and knowledgeable, i.e. presidential , MC is simply not in touch with our future nor the mess we are in thanks to his party. MC is truly petulant and grounded in the past. MC is arrogant, a sign of insecurity, borderline stupidity, because he is not as intelligent as his opponent and he will not admit that he is more of the same! McCain is also bitter and will not admit that cutting taxes on corporate US is not a way to improve the economy...where else is the money going to come from. The war is also intertwined with our economic problems...just look at the cost! Both human and economic!
I think it's because McCain was intimidated by Obama. Not to mention, he basically told of the past, but didn't know to many facts about what is going on today. Things have to change and McCain doesn't really seem to grasp that. It will be just as interesting to watch the Palin/Biden debate. That debate will show must people that there is no way that the two(McCain/Palin) are the right ones to be running our country. Biden is going to eat Palin alive.
And if you go back through the last two elections you will see that George avoided doing the same thing. Kinda freaky?
You are kidding right. This is what we are using to decide who is most qualified to be President?!
"I never saw McCain look at Obama through the whole debate, but Obama looked at McCain. Why is that?"
...WHO CARES???!
Only stupid liberals care about sh*t like this because they don't understand the dynamics of the real issues.
"McCain is out of touch" "We need change"....wtf does that even mean. You all sound like brainwashed sound bytes. Do you really think these things or do you merely regurgitate what you hear from your "side"?
If a new issue comes up or there is a topic that you don't know about, do you actually think about what the correct stance is on the position or do you just spit out the arguments that your "side" spits out?
If you go up to most liberals and quiz them on an issue without telling them which side Obama is on or which side the liberals are on, they will be completely dumbfounded. I have NEVER met a single liberal who has brought up a single valid point about ANYTHING.
Wow RonH, they have psychological drugs to help folks like you.
I almost thought you were going to say JFK. But you actually said Hitler.
Man I am usually saying "Heil King George."
But you sound like your already in the voting booth for this man that wants to finish the job of shoving his arm up the American workers arse.
you should really check out Utubes "End Game " movie.
McCain kept saying Obama doesn't understand, Obama is naive or he is not qualified and yet McCain picks Palin who knows nothing (except that Russia is her neighbor) has no experience and who fumbles when asked any kind of question. McCain just showed how unqualified he is to be our president.
I believe that it does not have much to do with his temper......Remember..these men are rehearsed and strategized by pros in how they are perceived by the public.--right down to their tie choices....
I think that the situation has more to do with subtle racist bodylanguage in order to appease a certain cross section of voters that McCain is courting.....
When you have not resolved your own since of social justice. When you have not confronted and resolved your own myths, false beliefs within you. When you have not taken the time to breakdown and reason with your own prejudices of race, gender as it relates to human equity and inequality. When you have not understood, identified or recognized the debilitating and far reaching effects of polarization and division. When you can not take a peripheral view of the human landscape and identify all our valuable traits no mater our color, race, and culture, and try to understand the commonalities that makes our species so unique, exploit what unites us and not those that divide us. Use that as the bases of power and resolve. Only then can you begin to take steps to galvanize a collective vision, that would shape a new world perspective and view that would really orchestrate change. Our best will come when all our power and strength will be linked and tided to our diversity, our greatest moments will come from all our creativity, because the backbone of real change is when we embraces the multitude, that is real direction McCain is not of that Stuff! real change will never come,he can not embrace all of us, I will take someone who look through a different set of eyes. McCain is not able to genuinely look at Qbama because he sees only himself not you and I not the world not humanity.
Bilal
ps thanks for giving me the chance to express myself
Last night's debate. McCain mainly addressed, with eye contact, the people in the seats and occasionally Obama and Lehrer. He should have made more eye contact with the camera. That was a wise move on Obama's part. It gave the tv/online viewer the illusion they were being looked at by the speaker. Obama is young. He has some good points, but he's debating with a man who has a whole lot of experience. While McCain talked, Obama appeared uncomfortable and insecure while he was looking at McCain. Palin appeared similar when being fiercely grilled in her first interview. McCain often wrote down points during Obama answers. They both didn't look at each other very much while addressing the questions, no doubt because they were addressing the voting public not the opposing candidate, who will be vote for himself.
Its a matter of respect. BHO doesn't desrve it - he has run a staff that has uglified the VP selction of GovPalin. BhusseinNoBama is part of an ANGRY left that is mean spirited and ready for litigation NOT leadership.
PLUS this network (MessNBC) is a Dem mouthpiece that spouts the left wing angry mantra - Keith NO-blerman and Chris LET-ME-SCREAM-A-LIL-LOUDER Mathews.
Get real -look at No-Bama - why...? That would just give hime credibility he DOESN'T deserve!
McCain didn't look Obama in the face because Obama is one of those that McCain has to stand up against because Obama isn't with him. This is how he will interact with leaders of foreign nations, the congress and court.
just like G.W. Bush has the past 8 years.
With McCain there can be no progress, because the only thing that is important is Oil, Corporations, and War.
Obama saying 'i agree with John' is just the first phase in finding common ground and getting your counterpart in the discussion to become engaged. McCain wouldn't be engaged with Obama because that would give Validity to Obama's arguments, and McCain didn't want to have to give any credit to him. The lie machine will fall apart if they give Obama any credit, so McCain was coached to not look at Obama, and focus on cameras and the moderator.
the debate was a draw, both made good points and defended themselves adequately.
the night goes to Obama because of his engaging manner, and what that infers about his ability to work with leaders of foreign nations.
For all of you who feel the need to spread fear mongering by making homosexual, racial, ethnic, and religious slurs to defend your candidate, you have my sympathy. it is difficult to be an ignorant bigot in this global world, and it is not so many years in the future that your Aryan race will be placed into history and forgotten in a world of an educated multiracial society. hate propaganda will never defeat freedom and equality.
I think it's because he wanted to be president for so long and now that he is the Republican nominee, he's losing to the Democratic party and of all things to an African American man.
John the phony McCain is a true Republican and shows his real persona every so often and last night he stood out with clarity and transparency.
Since the '60's the Conservatives have used the wink and nod through out the South after the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act were signed by President Johnson. (In fact as a Texan Johnson said the Democratic party has lost the South today as I sign these bills into law.) McCain is just following his Trent Lott instinct. He is no maverick that is a farce its all a persona of stories that are fabricated and just lies, I am from Arizona I know.
Last night John the RACIST McCain reared his ugly head and sent clear messages to the people in Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina and Florida- where he is in some trouble right now and even to southern Ohio, that by not looking at Obama he doesn't recognize the (N WORD GUY) Plain and simple and the dumb southerners eat it up. The Republicans have played these poor saps for over 40 years along with the religious right they took their money and votes and used them abused them, but because this is some kind of punishment to the Democrats it is all worth it because we are (N WORD LOVERS) and I've been called that as a white man in 1968 on the streets of Jackson, Mississippi as I walked with my college buddy who was black down main street.
THAT IS WHY MCCAIN DIDN'T LOOK AT OBAMA, TO SUCK THE SOUTHERNERS IN FOR ONE MORE ELECTION HOPING THEY DON'T CATCH ON TO HIS POLITICAL PLAY OF THE WEEK..
It's sometimes too difficult to do when you know they are an unethical creep!!
All Obama did was give McCain dirty looks, McCain wasn't quite so low.
John McCain is known for having a bad temper. I believe that the reason why he never looked at Senator Obama was because of his temper. During the debate, McCain only focused on the moderator. This was McCains way of keeping control of his emotions. I wonder if McCain will be practicing this tactic with world leaders during diplomatic summits. Hopefully, we will never find out.
Obama was the clear winner he was confident, intelligent and not afraid to look his opponent in the eye. McCain came across as an angry "trollish" old man...I couldn't help but notice his age the entire time.
Also, it was interesting to gauge the studio audience reaction at the end...everyone's eyes were on the Obama's when they left the stage the applause was especially loud. I heard that CNN ran some sort of meter at the bottom of their screen and the meter went down when McCain appeared...pretty sad.
A few people commented here on the fact that McCain never or hardly ever looked at Obama for the entire debate. My wife and I noticed that too, immediately. In fact, the first thing my wife said when we were watching the debate was "McCain just dissed Obama" - and that was at the handshake at the beginning. That was awkwrd - and it didn't get any better. Then it was the Obamas that had to go over and greet the McCains onstage, at the end of the debate. I thought this was very strange behavior on part of McCain. With as much experience that he has hobnobbing on Capitol Hill, in business circles, and around the world, you would think that he would have a little more common decency and etiquette under his belt. Especially as the bipartisan guy who's always "reaching across the aisle".
The only reasons I can figure that McCain didn't look at Obama almost the whole time are either: 1) he doesn't like debating in general and was nervous; 2) he didn't like the idea of having to debate Obama, specifically, and was therefore nervous; 3) he doesn't like/respect Obama - for whatever reason.
Whatever the reason for McCain's behavior towards Obama, it came across to me as shameful. He seems like the kind of person that might not take criticism well, plus he knows he's a big shot and hero (we hear about it a lot), but all those factors need to be put aside, and someone with decency, grace and standing in the McCain family/circle needs to take him aside and scold him for really bad manners. I figure, at a minimum, his campaign advisors/managers will try to make sure he fixes that before the next debate. We'll see.
Obama? He nailed the debate from A to Z... with substance, style and with basic, everyday, good manners.
averted gaze is a sign of insincerity, he was obviously uncomfortable with the answers he was providing. He was also likely attempting to contain his anger.
To 'Poorah": The reason Obama was looking at McCain was because he was talking to him. No other reason. don't you look at someone when you are speaking to/at/with them when in the dame room?
I think two things are at play here. Number one~Guilt because McCain knows he is running a DISHONORABLE campaign. Number two~He was trying to control his famous temper.
I think there are two reasons why McCain did not look at Obama. One-He knows he is running a DISHONORABLE campaign. Two-He was trying to keep his famous temper in check.
He didn't look at him because Mccain is a demon! LOL. And he never looked at the camera either. He can't be trusted!! mccain came off as a cocky old weirdo with old stories that has nothing to do with our future. The debate was interesting. it was interesting to see the candidates and how they handled it. Plus, he used phrases like 'trust me' wow! THANKS BUT NO THANKS!! I can't wait to see Palin and Biden!! I mean he went home to prepare and Palin went to 'debate camp'. This is going to be great! hahahahhahaha!!
Senator McCain said that he was looking at his notes, the moderators, and the American people.
I think he was busy trying to figure out what the hell to do with his VP choice. Too late John.
That simple we all know why....
He could not look Obama in the eye because when Obama contacted him about giving a joint statement about the country being in crisis - he took the idea and tried to make it seem as if it was his on. If any one doubted that to be true, his body language should have proven that to you.
Because he knows he is a liar. The entire debate all he did was lie and it was disgusting. Not only did he lie but he FAILED to state his position on the issues because he was too busy wasting his time trying to bash obama and his views. He sounded like a broken record "Obama fails to understand", "Obama doesn't get it", "Obama fails to see that.." and it was like okay well explain to the Americans what you feel and how you think.
If you looked closely at the debate, Senator McCain has a pen in hand and was busy writing down valid debate points about Asama Obama's statements. John McCain was a military officer. He spoke concisely in a military manor, using proper military posture during the debate. Obama used mostly slang in his sentences. McCain spoke eloquently on the other hand. If you watch the playbacks on the web of the debate, (which I have 22 times so far), you will notice this. I see so many comments about McCain not looking at Obama. Why should he? Obama is a civilian with hardly any worldly experience. McCain is a former pilot, POW, and war hero. I have a similar background and I wouldn't give respect to Obama as Obama has no respect for John McCain. The web polls are so unlike the real world polls! 80% for Obama? Remember, that is just the web. Hand gestures are not even a valid discussion anyway. America is! I am a moderate and Senator McCain is the only valid choice for me. Too many liberals are nit-picking at insignificant points! Of course, that is the way it has always been. They want something for nothing and offer empty promises. If you look at Senator Obama during the debate, watch his eyes. During interrogations, you can always tell when a suspect is lying by their eye movements. If they look down and to the right, you have to question the sincerity of their statements. (Of course, I leave it up to all the "experts" to figure out if they are looking at a mirror image from a camera or if it is actually like looking at a person in real life). I guess that you have to have been a combat veteran to fully understand what Senator McCain has gone through in his life. Of course most of the left wingers that I know have never been in the service. What is their excuse? "I would never have gotten through boot camp. I would have beaten the heck out of the D.I.'s". Yeah, sure they would have! The cowards left, (no pun intended), the United states and hid in Canada, and then the Democrats gave them amnesty! I am a middle of the road on politics, but if you run from the U.S.A. during wartime, then you get back after being a traitor, you are a fully qualified liberal and are able to shoot off your mouth about anyone that is not a far left winger!
Thanks
Obama looked at MCCAIN because he was in AWE!!!! He didn't have an answer so he said," John is right about this," and" John is right about that!" To see that so many liberals watch MSNBC is not shocking! They are truly a jackass station! The rest of the country knows that John McCain won hands down! Its fun to listen to the really stupid newsmen Jerk off Joe and that other IDIOT Keith O and the bleach-blond bimbo in the morning. They are the table of jackass that the Democrats feed cow dong to!
Why should McCain look at Obama? Jim Lehr was the one asking him the questions. But Obamah was a good boy and did as he was told.
Why should McCain look at Obama? Jim Lehr was the on asking him the questions. But Obama was a good boy and did as he was told. How Presidential!
You don't look someone in the eye for one of these basic reasons....
1- You're lying.
2- You're not in a power position and uncomfortable that they are.
3- You're scared.
4- You can't concentrate when you're looking at them because you're trying to keep your story straight and worried that they'll see through you.
There is no other reason. Body language rarely is false.
You can't look someone in the eye if you feel inferior to them, or on the other hand, you feel superior, but can't justify it. For JM, this race is too personal, and it would be a disaster to have a president that personalized his politics in such a way that he cuts off communication.
Maybe because when you look in the Devils eyes you only see death and destruction
Doesn't understand and inexperience!!! Who will look you in the eyes. Well done John. This dedate you nail it.
I was wondering the same thing the entire time. Obama constantly looked at McCain and gave him eye contact.
It is difficult for anyone telling deliberate untruths to face their opponent. The camera and a dark auditorium is a safer place to look. It would be interesting to know if Mr Lehrer also avoided McCain's glance.
You never saw McCain look at Obama, well I saw Obama saying "Your right John", I agree with John", John is absolutely right!" Obama had NOTHING and if you poll the south side of Chicago like all your other polls MSNBC does, then 80% think Obama won! Now REAL America saw John McCain as the winner of the debates that I watched! You say John McCain is out of touch, ask Obama who he's been friends with the past 20 years, does AYERS the weatherman terrorist sound familiar and who can forget REV WRIGHT. Chew on that cud for awhile. If you are at a loss for words I UNDERSTAND!!!
Well thats because all he heard from Obama was uu uum uhh ummm I think mmm uhhh well see me make fire and fire will make change and change comes from a vending machine and all Americans will get a prize
Well - who was McCain suppose to be talking to? The American puplic or Obama? A debate is where a moderator (ha ha) asks questions - the candidates look into the camera and explain their answer TO US - not to each other. DUH!
Obama looked like a fool.
A fool???? Are you completely blind and deaf? Obama spent the entire time talking about issues, and McCain spent the time talking about history and other anecdotes.
McCain is trying to keep it simple and give you a little history lesson so you and the like can understand and keep up with a fast moving conversation.
Some people just don't get it... and McCain is one of them.
Obama seemed to spend a large portion of his time talking about Bush's mistakes. he needs to needs to get up to speed and tell us how he will solve today's problems if he was given a responsible position. His basic posution that he keeps going back to that is to cut and run and don't look back in Iraq would be devastating to us.
I agree. Obama looked like a fool that didn't know anything about foreign policy.
You obviously were not watching the same debate or you are just biased toward
Barack Hussian Obama. McCain did extremely well and I wish more American people would really look at the facts. Barack Hussian Obama says the same thing over and over again. He has no meat to his answers. McCain is well versed in foreign politics. Yes he brought up the past however he has experience and is ready for to make real change for this country.
Lastly, Barack Hussian Obama while he was overseas he went to visit the injured U.S. troops and they would not let him bring his camera crew so he left that area in Iraq. How sad is that. Barack Hussain Obama couldn't get a pretty picture with our U.S. Soldiers so he left. Yeah I want him as my next President. NOT.
GO MCCAIN!
You wish....Obviously, you didn't look closely or even listen closely. You hear what you want to hear when you have little knowledge about the issues...Perhaps the foolishness is on the other view.
I thought it was foolish to be condescending, oppositional, and emotional. Give me a cool headed thinker. I heard plenty that would indicate Obama is informed about foreign policy (I wonder how much Palin is).
Poorah
Why don't you take that diseased mind of yours somewhere else?
Dear Fellow American.
I find you comment to be not correct. When Mr. McCain was in Iraq, Joe Lieberman had to inform him that the Sunnis are our enemy not the @!$%#es. It was the Sunnis, 16/19, that flew the planes into the Word Trade Center. Remember. If McCain does not know who are enemies are and who are our friends, how can you assert that Obama and not McCain doesn't know anything about foreign policy. I suggest that you place both hand on either side of your head and pull your head out of your rear end. Have a nice night or is it always night for you????????????????????
McCain did not even answer any questions. He said everything that Bush wanted him to say... that is why he wanted to go to Washington. We need change and Obama is the man to do it.
I totally agree... Take away the teleprompter and Obama is totally lost. What is troubling is someone with less experience than Gov. Palin is being taken seriously as a Presidential candidate.
Oh yes, she lives next door to Russia and Canada and that makes her experienced. LOL!!!!
I must disagree as it has become clear to me, after reading through several of the general posts here, that the average visitor here does not have the faintest clue as to what a leader is supposed to look like. McCain showed us exactly what a leader looks like. My dear, fellow Americans: PLEASE get the mp3 player out of your ear and pay attention. The very last person that you should want in the White House now is Obama because he is clearly not knowledgeable about what is required to be the leader of the USA. Having tea parties with the Iranian leader, at this time, and saying something like 'be a good dictatorship and put your nukes away' is hogwash! McCain is 100% right on this and nearly every other topic - YOU DO NOT LEND CREDIBILITY TO AGGRESSIVE NATIONS BY PUTTING YOUR PRESIDENT AT THEIR DISPOSAL! Obama might be a good nominee in 15 years or so - after hes had some time to get into politics more and learn the way the world works. This is not a simple, by comparison, mayoral election as he may be used to - there are MUCH bigger things at stake here than Obama's showmanship and lack of true knowledge to run thhis country!
Agreed and very concerned that we are more concerned with looks than substance.
A leader is not a bully. A leader is not someone who can't look his opponent or friend in the eye. A leader is someone who can work with others to resolve differences. A leader is someone who knows how to talk to his opponent in such a manner that doesn't cause misconeptions.
Finally a good leader is a leader with a plan. McCain has no plan. He has no thoughts that are his own. His opinion of the bailout was word for word what Obama said all week long. Clearly he is not what this country needs!
Foolish thought on your part. This was supposed to be John's strength. Guess what? The younger guy out-did him. John's talking point: war war war POW POW POW surge surge surge.
4 more years? NOT. No to Bush 44.
McCain = old fool
if obama looked like a fool...i wonder what you must look llike?
McCain had 26 years of "leadership" and all he's delivered is gamesmanship geared not toward "country first" but toward "win the presidency at all costs." He's strayed from his core beliefs to gain the votes of evangelicals and ultra conservatives..most evident was his choice of Palin...a woman may just be the dumbest-sounding politician I've ever heard...he made her a token and nothing more--he probably ruined her political future. Game over...republicans had eight years...EIGHT IS ENOUGH.
How rude of you? You must be a school kid. I have decided how to vote.......OBAMA/BIDEN. McCain answered the questions sort of, but he did not "look" like he was truthful or presidential. He looked like a wounded animal. I can' t trust him. I am ready for a change.
Hey, Amy... given how much you feel compelled to invoke Obama's middle name, I'm guessing yours much be real patriotic, huh? Amy Lincoln Washington Jefferson Betsy Ross Jones? Somethin' like that?
Honestly... you're basically hanging your hat on the ignorant mistrust of a man's middle name? Because that's, sadly, the LEAST nonsensical thing you had to say in your big, blathering ramble. That's really kind of pathetic, Amy Roosevelt Reagan McCarthy Smith.
Also, your opinion is pretty much invalidated by your use of a decade-old "Wayne's World" punchline at the end of your post. Would you like Obama more if he had retorted, just once, with "John McCain's blind deregulation of the banking industry and his staggeringly frightening dependence on offshore drilling to solve all our problems will certainly serve the country well... NOT!"?
Does anyone find it strange that the only people who though McCain won the debate don't back the statement up with examples or their comments were extremely racist?
Did anyone answer the question of where's Sarah? I'm really looking forward to Thursday night. I wonder what excuse they'll come up with to cancel that debate.
I agree! To those conservatives, oh heck I cant even call you conservatives anymore.
There nothing conservative about the- "the largest most expensive government in American history,
the creation of the largest debt in history, the largest financial crash in history, fighting a war based on subversion and duplicity then cheering on for the war to continue, katrina- the largest federal failure to handle a catastrophe in American history!" etc etc...
Now whats so conservative about these facts? Sounds more like fatalism, imperialism,
idiotism! Pick anything but conservative?
The last point Ill make since it went over everyone head.
Mccain said this when asked how he would respond to the current financial crisis! "I would immediately freeze all spending except the military, the pentagon and veterans!" Ladies and gentleman - McCain doesn't get it! That would mean the end to the United States as we know it! In essence he is saying he will create and maintain military/police state at all costs! This is what the Roman Empire did this is what Nazi Germany did, this is what Imperial Japan did!
The policies of Bush/McCain are a dismal failure, the proof is in your house equity, your bank accounts, your paycheck, it's on Wall street, its on the shelves of your supermarket, its on the corner gas station, its in job and house lose,
its on the streets and deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan.
It's in the defiance of Pakistan, Russia, Venezuela and now China!
Wars are won or lost by the rightness, wisdom and decency of the participants!
As our nations history goes we have never lost a war when we were right but now we have lost wars because we were ideologically wrong! It's not just about strength its about wisdom and justice.
American qualities that have been inactive during the past seven plus years of GOP politics! These are the American qualities that George Bush, John McCain and most of the GOP and some dems too will never grasp! Senator Obama knows this, he pertains the basic wisdom, that when it comes to war- you must first do all you can to maintain peace!
This is how you support and respect your military and how you show love to our nation!
Poora or whatever,
Typical Republican response. Calling someone names when you can't think of any thing else to say.
The only fool here today is the person who believes John McCain's crap. He is a phony war hero and a disgrace to the uniform, He got caught he cracked he signed documents with the enemy only POW's who escape or try to escape and take fellow POW's with them are heroes. McCain did neither. Probably because he likes guys right fella. You've been writing that all over here today maybe you and McCain have latent tendencies towards Larry Craig's wing of the GOP.
Overall, I'd say McCain won that debate. However, both sides did well. At least McCain actually sounded sincere.
I could tell McCain actually cared about me. Not the case with Obama. McCain got him a few times, and I don't think McCain ever got jumped by Obama.
you must be a veteran...because i am not a veteran and felt like all he cared about was Reagan.
Captain rainbow. Sounds like a sissy name. You must fall to a lot of Bull$hit if you think McClown is sincere. Don't you know that this country will go to hell if McClown wins.
If he was a vetran he would know that McCaind does not care about him. Just look at his votig record.
lol, and i'm middle class and i know he didn't/doesn't care about me!
Sincere?!?? How can you come across as sincere if you can't look anyone in the eye?
He resorted to canned lines ("I saw three letters... K... G... B...", "He clearly doesn't understand", etc.)...
Sorry, you can cling to your belief if you want, because you'll never believe anything else, but I think McCain lost.
Obama sounded really canned. He talked a lot about having plans, but he rarely actually described what those plans would be. He even dodged the question of what he'd be forced to cut because of the massive bail-out the government is doing right now.
McCain went indepth on nuclear power, and he overall kept his composure better than I thought he was going to.
Wow, you must be a corporation because he wants to throw more money at you and let you suck America dry!
If John McCain wins I suggest the middle class goes to barter and stops paying taxes.
I disagree, I think Obama won. He's much cooler under pressure. He's intelligent and clearly thinks things through and isn't afraid to say he agrees with someone from another party. I want these things from my president. McCain is too much of a hot head and another four years of Bush policy is TOO risky for our country.
McCain doesn't care about veterans--he voted AGAINST the GI bill that would give those who serve their most fundamental benefits.
And Obama reacted calmly and cool to last week's financial crisis. McCain floundered and lashed out calling for Cox's resignation....pretty reactionary and totally wrong.
Yes. Sincerity and certainty when delivering flawed positions on foreign affairs is much better than having an open mind to other, more sound options. Sincerity that sitting down to talk with world leaders without demanding something from them legitimizes everything they do is productive for our status in the world. Sincerity that cutting spending for everything but mishandled wars and cutting taxes for everyone except those who need it most will be better for Americans than ensuring they can afford health care and education.
Sincerely, John McCain is the worst choice for Americans who want to see us return to a state of economic prosperity and a position as a global leader. This debate clearly demonstrated that.
You must be smoking something illegal to think that McCain won the debate. He couldn't even look the American public in the eye let alone Obama. Obama showed real courage and knowledge of the issues. Whereas all McCain could do was try to cloud the issues with meaningless fodder.
Are you serious? McCain lost hands down he would not even look the man in the eye and how can you trust a man who won't look you in the eye and tell you what he thinks and you say McShame won the debate he danced all around the issues besides who would you rather have as your next president a guy who has no college education or a guy that's a Harvard graduate, by the way did you know that McCain graduated 894 of the 899 in his military training class and in closing we already see what a lack of education can get us in the white house.
I only got to see parts of the debate, it was OK, but borring. What gets me is all the people that think their goverment owes them, tax cut, health care, nice house and high paying jobs. Hope they give you everything that you want. Make the rich pay for it. Cuz face it they have more than they need and we have so little. Good luck folks, you will need it, who ever wins this election............
Huh, where did you pull that from? McNasty only cares about his own personal glory, why else would he keep harping on the look at me i was a war prsonwer, so feel sorry for me. He only picked Palin to try andget Senater Clinton's disgruntaled female voters.
McCain just gave us a history lesson on F.P. (What a sleeper). Please correct me if I am wrong, did he mentioned that the Secretary of State is Marilyn Albright?
NO!! he was talking about Albright's trips to Korea to work out a deal back when she was in office. Of course you were hearing only what you wanted to hear. The bias, liberal media has fed you so much snitized and sectionalized news that it has worn off on you.
I must respectfully disagree. McCain's positions on veteran's issues have varied widely. He's been absent on recent veterans legislation: while Obama has voted favorably for more recent veterans issues:
Just saying.
Hmmm, apparently my links don't work. Anyway, if you go to project vote smart and look up each candidate and their voting record, specifically searching for veterans issues, you'll see a clear disparity. Obama is definitely more pro-veteran.
McCain is the worst ever for veterans issues Check out this story if you don't belive it. (Click Here)
So you don't think Obama "jumped" McCain?? What about Obama looking directly into the camera and telling 95% of American that he won't raise their taxes, despite the wide spread lie put out by the GOP that he would raise them on people making $42K or when he pointed out over and over that McCain was WRONG about the war, or when he pointed out McCain's STATED position to continue the tax cuts for the wealthy??!?! WAKE UP AND PUT DOWN THAT KOOL-AIDE GLASS!! My vote will be tied to the issues and the FACTS!! One fact that will come back is the one tying Rick Davis (J.McCains Campaign Manager) to the 15k a month payments he was getting from Fannie/Freddie that ended just LAST MONTH. Just Thursday it was reported that business records show Mr. Davis to be Pres. and Treasurer of the company that bears his name.
JUMPED????? Obama did that and more! FACTS and FOWARD thinking are what matter.
I agree Captain Rainbow and Senator John McCain won the Debate.
McCain is a true Statesman and courageous Leader. Senator McCain believes in service to our Country while Senator Obama is all about service to himself.
Regarding "the looking at your opponent in the Debate issue," there was no need for Senator McCain to look at Senator Obama during the Debate. Senator McCain looked at and spoke to the audience and the American people, sincerely and from his heart.
Senator Obama on the other hand, sounds a lot like a Political Science Professor or a Law Professor. He is much better as a Lecturer and also Senator Obama is NOT a man of ACTION. Senator Obama is a TALKER not A DOER!!!
In all the time that Senator Obama was in Chicago; there was little or no improvement for his constituents in his District. The only person whose lot in life improved in that relationship was Obamas. Senator Obama has sold his supporters a bill of goods because none of what he is offering as Policies will be implemented. Obama's Policies are fantasy (even if some of the ideas are good); there is NO money to carry these policies out. Of course, Senator Obama may just bankrupt the entire Country should he ever become POTUS!!
The majority of the American people know this and Obama/Biden will loose the Election for POTUS in November.
We need real REFORMERS and REAL LEADERS in Washington!!! Those Leaders with experience who know how to make CHANGE happen are McCain/Palin08.
Prosperity, Reform and Peace
Victory for REAL PATRIOTS who WORK FOR THE PEOPLE!!!
McCain/Palin08
I am a Vietnam Veteran and I do not think that McCain cares about Veterans... or children, the poor, the middle class, the disenfranchised or our country (Well he did pick Sarah Palin as his running mate...how much thought could he have put into that disasterous pick.) He is also a tortured soldier who recently voted against a bill to eliminate America's use of torture (waterboarding)...how can he possibly be taken seriously or respected. The John McCain of 2000 is gone.
HEY YOU OUT THERE-IF YOU ARE A VETERAN YOU NEED TO REALIZE THAT MCCAIN VOTED AGAINST THE NEW GI bill-not for it!He does not care about anyone, but the rich.DONT BELIEVE ME----ASK IAVA,THEY SHOWED ME HIS VOTING RECORD. WOW HE IS SUCH A COMFORTABLE LIAR,AND YOU ALL ARE BUYING HIS BS! WAKE UP!! WAKE UP ITS 2008!
Any Veteran that votes for John the phony McCain deserves what they get no new legs or arms and no dignity. McCain is for himself and for his 100 million dollar Bimbo Cindy (now don't everyone get excited even though it is admittedly a cheap shot at John's Bimbo wife but here in Paradise Valley Arizona the question in the bars have always been even before 2000 was so hows the Bimbo doing. Her alcoholism and her drug problems are the conversation. Did you know when she did get caught for buying illegal drugs the doctor lost his license but the Bimbo got a slap on the hands. If that had been any of us we would still be in jail.
Carly,
I wanted to comment to what you said as far as McCain being a reformer. I for one personally believe in term limits for that very reason. 26 years in Washington makes it hard for anyone to be a reformer. After that period of time, the only things one becomes is part of the very same problem he/she talks about. Case in point is McCain whom I have had a great deal of respect for many years along with Dick Lugar. But a voting record and an agenda on par with the current president who is possibly the worst in history does not make one look like a reformer one bit. It's status quo which is what it will be if McCain takes office. Second McCains health is well not the greatest and I feel it would be very bad for the country to elect someone with whom we know has a at best very moderate possibility of not completing his term and leaving our fate up to a political novice as Palin is woman or not (being a mayor for a town of 7k and governor for barely half a term is not quantifiable to me). So while I believe OBama won the debate rather handedly, I also believe between the two candidates he is the more qualified for the position as President of the United States.
Hmmm....I think sounding sincere is no longer the dominant criterion to select someone. Its easy to sound sincere, then get elected and do nothing(or damage) for four years. I respect what appeals to you but for a lot of us more than the impression of sincerity is the need to hear substance and a plan of action for problems that afflict us.
There are too many people who watch 30 seconds of an ad on TV while flipping channels and make a selection based on that. Its important to research what each candidate and party offers and its record in the past. For me, Obama addressed issues on the economy and foreign policy that matter to me. Still would like to hear more about education and health care in future debates.
McCain never got jumped by Obama, because Obama respected McCain. McCain was disrespectful, arrogant and pompous. I want more in a President! Obama is the only choice! I cannot stand 4 more years of a President I despise. Obama '08
What a presidential performance by Barack Obama. Our next president for sure!
Did you watch the same debate that I did? Even the media (left) is saying that McCain won that one.
Obama couldn't even remember the name of the young man on his wrist. He was tongue tied and had to read it off his wrist. What a shame.
Obamas way of saving money was only to mention how many things he wanted to spend money on! Hmmm, interesting.
Steven C must be smoking crack while listening to FOX news. Try changing channels once in awhile and broaden your horizon. Even FOX's focus group from Las Vegas had the majority of viewers voting that Obama won.
Apparently your thought process/comprehension is different from mine! I distinctly remember Obama holding on to the point that there are many- yet to be established- variables that will determine HOW much money- and WHERE- will be will be used to implement "change" when he becomes President. Perhaps he exemplified being 'tongue-tied' when I went to get a glass of water thereby rendering me incapable of witnessing such a faux-paux!
With all of the issues he needed to concentrate on ( and he did so WITHOUT a teleprompter) you deem him a "loser, incompetent," because he needed to retrieve a name from his wrist! Could you have done better under the same circumstances?
As for the Media declaring McCain the 'winner,' that conclusion would have to be based on the type of criteria used to determine such................intellect or emotion.
Obama talks about the facts and issues. McCain talks about his personal feelings--and Obama.
Obama over and over CLEARLY showed his lack of experience - this is disgraceful that this country is actually considering him to be our president! Obama has no idea what he is actually talking about, he is simply reciting what his campaign has prepped to him. And we SHOULD be looking at our history of presidents because without understanding of what the previous presidents did wrong or right HOW can any current president even pretend to claim that he or she understands how to lead the USA and the other free nations that do follow us and do lookup to us for the personification of freedom?
Clay, sorry, but your comment shows no base in fact or rational thinking that could be sincerely derived from their debate. McCain answered and rebutted everything Obama had easily, precisely, and with pre-knowledge that can ONLY come from knowing exactly what he is talking about.
When Obama talked about Iran he not only showed his lack of experience but, he scared me. Just to think we would have someone like him running for President when he is so weak on foriegn affairs. Was not the attack on America not enough to show that you must be tuff with Iran and other who hate America. I even think Palin is tuffer than Obama and would do more to protect us in time of need. I am a Democrat that is being forced to vote Republican because my own party will not offer me a canidate that makes me feel safe and know they are experienced. Anyone saying Obama won the debate is surely looking at the good looks and smile not what really counts.
PALIN????? WOULD YOU TRUST THE US TO SOMEONE WHO CANNOT ANSWER A QUESTION WITHOUT A LOT OF BS OR TRYING TO REMEMBER WHAT THE BUSH WRITERS WROTE FOR HER? SHE KNOW nothing!
Jake S, you defeat your own comment with this question, "And we SHOULD be looking at our history of presidents because without understanding of what the previous presidents did wrong or right HOW can any current president even pretend to claim that he or she understands how to lead the USA and the other free nations that do follow us and do lookup to us for the personification of freedom?" It is this statement that furthe proves McCain who was a part of the disater should not be able to continue on this path of distruction. Why allow history to repeat itself for another four years. McCain nothing more than a walking history listen of how not to do things. Obama is refreshing. As most business leaders will tell you, it's good to have a fresh pair of eyes working to resolve current issues.
Zadie what do you mean that "When Obama talked about Iran he showed his lack of experience"? He knew more about it than McCain. He knew one of the most important facts, that if we were to negotiate with Iran it would be with the Clerics who actually run the country. Not the president Ahmadinejad, he has no real power. Anyone who keeps up with the news and information would know that. And especially when you have been in congress as long as McCain and touts himself as a foreign affairs expert. He should also know that the Iranian people like America and want our life style. But when we spout aggression like McCain does they support their clerics even though they disapprove of them. And Zadie I would be afraid of a president who could not even pronounce a foreign head of states name. Sound like another republican we all know? Obama did not seem to have trouble. And Obama was right about Kissinger, he did say that about talking to Iran. At a forum with 5 ex Secretaries of state. You see unlike McCain and you, I watch more than Fox News. There are plenty of places you and McCain can get this kind of info.
And as for the attack on America, Iran had nothing to do with that. Those Ideas and grass roots came from Sadia Arabia. And was able to grow in Afghanistan. After the Afghanistan war with Russia we just left the country to failure. And now we are reaping what we did not fix. And by the way the people who flew the planes into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the field in PA, are Sunie's which is what alqiada is. Iran is Shia and has nothing to do with alqiada. This does not mean they are not a threat. But you seem to think all Muslims are in this together and are out to get us. With out the understanding how these two entities work and fight us and why, that makes people like you and McCain dangerous. You because of how you will vote with so little understanding and information. You say you do not feel secure with Obama's foreign affairs knowledge but yet you have absolutely no knowledge about the subject what so ever. So how can you even make a statement like this. I am not a collage grad. I am just an average person, but I do take my world and responsibility to vote serious. That is why I educate myself before I make a decision. And I don't mean Fox!
You say you are a Dem. and the party gave you no choice but to vote for McCain. Please do some research into how we got into this banking mess. McCain is all over that. I am not attacking the man, I am just going on the facts. Something you really need to investigate instead of letting 30 second adds, and deception be your guide. And one might think, since you are a professed Dem, that maybe color could be an underlying factor. Either way your lack of information and if color is a factor, it would appear ignorance is the true guide to your choice.
hey Zadie,
The world and even history seem more complicated than simplistic. Yesterdays enemies become today's allies. How do World War II veterans feel about our ties to Japan and Germany for example. America's trying to do business in China because of the population of a billion and low cost of manufacturing; but then there is a resentment when China's economy rises and competes with the US for resources.
In the case of Iran, they had the Shah (pre-1970) who was backed by the US government, (much like Marcos of the Philippines) . The Shah killed and tortured his own people like many tyrants of the time. That led to "the Revolution", the Ayatolah, anti-American feelings and the return to Islamic fundamentalism. Could some of this been avoided or curtailed if there was at least dialog and an attempt to understand?
Terrorism is not limited to the US. It happens in tourist areas like Bali, and Ireland, the UK, Spain and less spoken or reported events in Africa and Asia. I relate with your fear-- the unease of feeling safe in a crazy "what next" kind of world. But the solution is not to kill all our enemies and colonize all who disagree with us.
Jake and his ilk will never concede that Obama is more than capable of being president. He was the one who knows what the word "debate" means; he actually discussed the issues while McCain spoke in generalities and politically attacked Obama. That is not what a debate is about; it is to inform the people of your ideas not to denigrate.
You could see at the end that McCain felt he was "losing" when he did not answer the last question but concentrated on the war in Iraq and the surge. It was so obvious that he was desperate and trying not to show it. He couldn't look at Obama because he would have "lost it." I have no idea where McCain stands on the bail-out because he did not say. The war in Iraq is irrelevant to me; I want our soldiers to come home. I want no more unnecessary deaths of Americans or Iraqis and want that $$$ to be spent on our infrastructure, our schools, our medical needs. The surge is totally irrelevant. In the long run it will never work, there will be no victory, and violence will continue whether we are there or not. For McCain to continue saying Obama doesn't want victory and continue to say he voted against the surge falls on deaf ears when people are losing their homes and jobs, can't pay their bills, prices skyrocket, kids cannot afford college - especially when he goes back to the Keating 5 and has been a big promoter of deregulation which has taken us to where we are.
And to keep refering to Ronald Reagan is a killer. People now see what the Reagan administration has brought us. It was under the Reagan administration that much of what we are seeing economically started. Under Reagan the trickle down philosophy began, deregulation, pro-business, decline of traditional pensions, etc. Some people want to blame Clinton saying that in 1999 there was pressure on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to give sub prime mortgages to those who could not affotd a home, suggesting that this came from Clinton. But remember who had control over congress - the republicans. Under Reagan we saw the largest deficit in history (until Bush II), record number of foreclosures (until Bush II), tremendous growth for large businesses (until Bush II), deregulation and lack of oversight (until Bush II), need I say more?
McCain is the past. Obama the future.
That was the McCain insulting, steaming hot head barely under control. That's not the hand I want on the button.
Agreed. Not someone I would want as commander and chief. McCain reminds me too much of GW. Both McCain and GW avoid talking / looking at people they don't like. Much less he lied when he spoke about taking care of the vets - he's vetoed most of the bills that would benefit vets.
McCain looked like he was going to blow his top at times. Why is he so angry and why was he so dismissive?
Too late Achilles01........this administration has already bombed Pakistan.....and missed the bad guys.
Are you paid to say this garbage? MCain was very clearly under control and extremely rationale the entire debate! Obama was stuttering and searching for words almost the entire time! WHY?! Could it possibly be because Obama has no substantial experience and McCain does? Could it be that MCCain knows exactly what he is talking about? Could it be that the general public is being dazzled by Obamas general showmanship to avoid his failings for this job?
Which would you, comparatively, rather have driving your car with you in it across the country: The driving instructor who has 25 years experience OR the instructors latest pupil?
I will vote for stability, experience and McCain!
Are you paid to say this garbage? McCain couldn't remember where his sentences were going once he started them. The reason it seems like Obama is searching for words is he tries to speak in complete sentences because they are easier to understand. Easier than McCain who just a bunch of meaningless words together.
Experience: What organization has McCain led? What has he done in his 26 years in the Senate other than complain?
Interesting Jake S. You do realize that you have contradicted yourself by saying "Obama was stuttering and searching for words almost the entire time" on minute then turing around and uttering " the general public is being dazzled by Obamas general showmanship", right?
Any show or presentation I have been involved in did not name stuttering as dazzling showman ship. So which is it you want to accuse Obama of, being a bubinling fool or master showman? Granted, Obama was not in top form, but he knew what he was talking about and took time to think through his answer, not smirk away from and make unfunny, patronizing jokes about his opponent while repeating the same tired phrases to whole time.
Jake:
Who would you rather have flying a plane your in?
A 72 year old pilot that was at the bottom of his aviation class and had a history of crashing planes(5 times) or a 45 year old pilot who has only been flying for 4-5 years but has no crashes and was at the top of his class.
In all of McCain's 26 years in politics, he has done very little(if anything) to help the middle class, the poor, women and veteran's.
I suppose you prefer Obama's voting record that reflects his concern for perverts, big pork bill's, and Fannie Mae! He voted AGAINST regulating it in 2005! Nice... you must not pay taxes.
McCain won this debate with ease, he showed how not ready Obama is.
Really? You sure you were watching or busy drinking at the VFW...
"A person convinced against their will is of the same opinion still." Obama won and you know it. The only way McCain won that debate is if you had the sound off.
mc cain showed that he was studying his history book the night before and showed how much hes living in the past and doesnt want to move forward
LOL! I think McCain needs to get an understanding that we are looking towards the future... not H I S past. McCain showed how easily he gets rowled up. Keep him awwwwwwaaaaayyyyy from the button.
Who was McCain looking at in the audience...It looked like he was looking for help with a confused look on his cranky old face. Oh....Sarah must have been in the Audience.
I have tried hard to see any merit or validity in comments made by McCain supporters tonight. All I hear is the same empty rhetoric the Right has been spewing all along - and none of it based in fact or reality. It's as if we watched an entirely different debate. I don't get it.
Seriously, SL-576194, how did McCain show how "not ready" Sen. Obama is to assume the office of the presidency? Considering that foreign policy is supposed to be Sen. McCain's strong suit, the debate I watched showed a well-informed, articulate, responsive Sen. Obama who did pretty well at answering the questions asked and defending his position - & integrity - when he was personally attacked. Although I admit they both equivocated on the bailout question, which was posed to them 3 times by the moderator. I think Sen. McCain attacked, tried to belittle, and condescended toward Sen. Obama at least 10:1. I did not hear much of substance from Sen. McCain, just the same old tired talking points the Right has been using against Sen. Obama throughout the campaign - most of it distorted and some of it not even true. For instance, Sen. Obama NEVER said he would sit down with Iran w/out preconditions. It's a distortion based on a sound bite Sen. Obama made almost a year ago that has since been distorted and blown completely out of context.
I feel bad for you and others like you who are so set in your perception of reality that you seem completely unable to see what is so obvious to the rest of us - that Sen. Obama has the right stuff.
For the record & in the interest of full disclosure, I am a lifelong Democrat & my mind has been made up about who I will vote for Nov. 4 a long time ago. In spite of that, the reason I watched tonight was to see how each of the candidates stacked up side by side. In all honesty, I thought Sen. McCain did much better than I expected him to, but if I had to pick a winner based on their honesty, integrity, stage presence, grasp of the issues, intelligence and communication skills, Sen. Obama leads in every category - which I believe will be shown to the entire world when we go to the polls 5 weeks from now.
brenda: you must be young, like Obama, because you instantly dismiss experience and knowledge.
Here's an old, sad fact for ANY government at ANY time: when a government and it's country are going through hard times you DO NOT elect a president who has no substantial experience working with presidents, leaders, foreign powers, internal organizations, and the like.
Obama will be a good president in a few years AFTER he gets more experience and exposure to the real world and gets out of his 'everyone loves everyone' idea - because that is NOT how the world operates and it is NOT the treatment any American will get from the terrorist states like Iran and North Korea and perhaps even China and Russia IF the USA does not get it's head on straight and get out of the socialistic idiot-cracy that has swept over the majority of our populace that seems to allow Americans to think that the world outside of our shining borders is care-bear land and everyone will just be peaceful and happy with each other. Tings are like that in the USA because of the dedication of leaders like Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Reagan along with the bravery of our troops in defending free-will in places like Europe, Saighon, Korea, Africa, and hundreds of other places around the glove over the last 100+ years.
WAKE-UP America and smell the stench of tyranny because that is exactly what will be imposed on us if we do not elect the most experienced and knowledgeable candidate for the presidency now.
Poor Jake,
I'm old too, but that doesn't automatically, mean that a younger person is less capable than me in any number of areas. You miss the point, we are experiencing a tyranny here. The tyranny of the super rich fat cats who have called the shots on Wall Street. They are now demanding we bail them out of the mess they lobbied for. McCain has experience, he's been in bed with the Fat Boys on Wall St and the banking industry for years (think Keating 5). McSame bought the WMD lies that Chenny and Bush used to get us into this disastrous Iraq war. That war has killed our young men and women. Oh, but that's okay by you, they're just young and have no experience.
Jake - you are really out of touch. To mention John McCain and FDR in the same sentence is ridiculous. The fact is, the Conservatives have NEVER gotten over FDR. They try to reverse all of the good things that FDR did for the America during the (last) Great Depression and World War II. The implementation of Social Security and the G.I. Bill were Roosevelt programs that changed the United States for the better. It is also wrong to compare McCain to Eisenhower. It was Eisenhower who warned about the Military Industrial Complex:
In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together.
It is fair to compare McCain to Reagan - our worst President (until the current one). It is interesting that the Republicans who dismissed McCain, Gore and Kerry (all veterans) in favor of the ne'er-do-well party animal frat-boy GWB and 5-deferment Dick, are now so adamant about military service as a prerequisite for the Presidency.
Bizlady,
Just one coment. You talking about honesty, integrity, stage presence, grasp of the issues, intelligence and communication skills. Lets keep one thing clear and is has been one of my thing in this campaign. Obama is not black, He said it last night " My father came from Kenya in the 60". Why you think Obama won against Hilary, It wasn't because he is better, that was the weapon democrats were going to use and are using right now in this campaign BLACKS V/S WHITE.
SL: Were you watching the same debate I was? Obama was presidential, well spoken and polite. McCain was busting veins in his forehead, writing loudly while Obama was speaking and most of all...he was condescending. He looked like it was absurd that he should be up there with a black man. McCain has lost it! I have never disliked a candidate more than McCain. I think he is arrogant and mean!
You've got to be kidding. McCain never looked once at OBama...I think due to the fact that he knew he lied and he was angry and stiff the whole debate. It's sad that a man (McCain)at his age acts like a child. That sure was not the way a true man would act during a debate. He has been in the Senate for 26 years and has been part of the problem. He claims he will go to the gates of hell to get Osama well if he knows where he is why hasn't he gotten him. He has voted with Bush's policies and budgets 90% to 95% of the time which has gotten us in the mess this country is in at present. When will people in this country see THE LIGHT and stop looking through rose colored glasses. If God doesn't help us we're in TROUBLE.
This is the debate that McCain was supposed to shine and make Obama look dumb, naive and inexperienced and he didn't. McCain couldn't even pronounce the names of some of the leaders of the countries brought up in the debate. He is famous for shooting off his mouth, he is a high stakes gambler and his running mate makes me ill with worry. Not because she is "good" for his party, but horrible for America if he gets elected. I know McCain loves his country and served it well in the Navy, but he needs to continue to serve America as a Senator, not as POTUS.
I don't know a ton about politics, but to say McCain seemed arrogant and not mention how arrogant Obama came across on virtually everything he said is just sad.
McCain is in the past nothing offered for the future.Obama is a gentleman,McCain old sad man.
When you say "arrogant" about Obama, I hear "uppity."
You're the one who is arrogant.
Ummmmm! Repub, excuse me! Obama is "confident" and HUMBLE not ARROGANT dummy! Humble enough to go to the underprivileged neighborhoods of Chicago instead of Washington! Problem is, YOU PEOPLE only want to give "the crumbs from the rich man's table" to people in those neighborhoods. Equality is not important to some wealthy people, sad! In case you didn't know or remember that he graduated at the TOP of his class at HARVARD, not the BOTTOM of his class, thank you! Studied POLITICS, not JOURNALISM!! I know, y'all's problem, it's called JEALOUSY!
What you call arrogance is actually confidence. That combined with the ability to look your opponent in the eye and engage them in conversation - or debate - are two of the essential skills needed to be an effective diplomat and a trustworthy leader.
Obama did show the nation that he has a very effective combination of confidence and knowledge even when up against an opponent who should have had the upper-hand on this topic.
Obama reinforced my own confidence in casting my vote for him.
Well, I don't pretend to know who Mark supports, but to imply he is racist or jealous just because he thinks Obama appeared arrogant is silly and short-sighted. I think those who don't support Obama and also don't support McCain out number those who support one or the other candidate. There's plenty of people who don't want either for president. (Notice there wasn't a "None of the above" box?)
Also, all this look-not-look-in-eye and arrogant-not-arrogant stuff is a distraction from the real issues, but par for the coarse this election season.
Ho hum...the comments here are as liberal as ever tonight
What do you expect from MSNBC watchers, at least I watch all the news channels and make my own opinions..John (not 2 times Tom) had information just flowing out, Obama stutters a lot...
Respectful and considerate are NOT liberal comments. It is so time for a change from the smirks and empty headed comments and patronizing behaviors that have driven our nation into the ground.
my definition of liberal: the ability to see both sides of an issue and make an informed decision that you personally can live with... like fixing health care, taking care of the younger gen, and taking care of our planet..
Thank you for clearing that up for unfair people who only want to see the negative in our presumed President Obama. I have tried to find positive things in McCain and Palin but they are such pathological liars!!! They can be truthful about moose burgers, moose stew, hockey mom and McCain's POW experience I guess! Repubs? How can any of this help us in the white house? No significance for leadership of a nation. And for the person stating that Obama is the anti-Christ apparently DO NOT know the Bible. Anti-Christ will be middle eastern, straight-A student among other details. He will not even rise to power until AFTER the 2nd coming of Christ. God WILL judge all of you who are pre-judging other people because of skin color and nationality. It is a sad fact that, although Obama will win, his votes will be less due to racism. I am a proud African-American woman and was going to vote for Hillary but decided Obama's plan is more suitable for me. Bill Clinton was excellent and he helped ALL people, rich and poor of ALL nationalities! I assumed Hillary's leadership would be very similar if not better than her husband's. I remember Clinton helped me as a single working mom as far as child care assistance and more. Bush forces us to either quit our jobs, reduce work hours or work for gasoline ant rent with nothing left!!! Very hard scuffling and unbearable! We don't need the same thing from McCain now pretending to care about us economically when he knows that him and Bush is "Ace, boon, coon"!! Obama-Biden 2008-2016 if I can help it!
But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal." --John F. Kennedy
Bravo! Way too many people have become (wrongly) convinced that Liberal is a negative. Look it up in the dictionary. It is positive.
Obama/Biden '08
Thank you, wonderfully put.
Senator Obama talked about what he will do as president, all McCain talked about was Senator Obama said this, Senator Obama said that....any ideas of your own Senator McCain?
McCain did well in the debate. Better than I expected. But if people see Obama breaking even or better in the foreign policy debate, then he won.
With such high expectations for McCain in his "strong suit" I'd say Obama more than covered the spread.
McCain proves over and over how Obama has no experience or understanding of the issues or solutions.
McCain has the experience and knowledge to lead this country. Obama just shoots from the hip and has not idea what he's saying
just because McCain kept saying Obama doesn't understand - doesn't necessarily means that is the case. Obama showed more knowledge on these issues, not to say that McCain doesn't understand, but Obama allowed his stances to be prevalent, wheras McCain attempted to strike the heartstrings of the American people. The people are tired of being spoken at - it's time for change, and we know it. OBAMA 08!!
Just to be clear:
Now you do know that Obama was the younger, taller gentleman, and McCain was the older, shorter gentleman who has a "record" of shooting from the hip with poorly stated ideas and failed judgments in everything from his first marriage to the "Keating Five" savings and loan scandal to present day Iraq. Really was this the best Republican "foil" the GOP could muster?
McCain showed that he is as much a puppet as Sarah "Caribou Barbie" Palin.
McCain has experience under a failing foreign policy strategy. I don't want 4 more years of the same approaches to our problems with the middle east. We need a new direction with our policies. I don't believe McCain has the humility to recognize when his plans aren't working. Obama offers a real direction in the war on terror which is why we are there in the first place.
McCain's plans aren't working? Did you watch the debate? Do you know what strategies are being employed in Iraq? When the military surge was first brought up, Obama claimed that he couldn't think of one military expert who would agree with that...what is he saying now "it worked beyond my wildest dreams". Someone needs to realize that Obama is severely inexperienced on this matter and it is too great of a risk to allow him to learn while on the job.
This job ISN'T some of the cuff job you can study for, you do not have a clue what is going to happen to the country.....did GEORGE W. know that we were going to be attacked???? OH yes there is a theory that yes in fact he did know. Here is what i heard and should be addressed!!!!!!
John McCain stated that the "system corrupted officials", excuse me, the officials corrupted the system. Honest ppl can not be corrupted.
I intend to vote for someone I think is most honest, and that isn't John MCcain or Sarah Palin. Not at all.
YOU PEOPLE are in such denial! McCain has plenty experience from Bush on a "to-be-continued" basis on how to continue to make the rich richer and the poor poorer! When you Repubs and confused Independents look at their tax plans, you treat it like reading the bible. You agree with the part that sounds good and eliminate the part that you are comfortable with. Sorry, doesn't work that way. Obama's taxing the wealthy earning over $250,000.00 a year is a result of Bush doing the opposite, taking money from poor people who did not have to give and allowing them to pay taxes for the wealthy. Soooo unfair!!! Absolutely, and every body said, "AMEN"! McCain would win first prize on this one. Obama/Biden 2008-2016 if I have anything to do with it!
It only took 20 years for the commission on presidential debates to get the questions out of the debate!
McCain wouldn't even directly look at the camera. He can't look at the citizens of our country in the eye???
Obama won and in the end McCain just tried to make him look bad.
I forgot to add how McCain said he "loved" veterans. He said he would take care of them, and how they knew he would take care of them.
However, he neglected to mention how he would take care of them. Is he going to provide funds? Where is he going to find these funds? How comprehensive would his plan be? He must've "forgot" to include the details.
absolutely not. Get a clue. Watch it again. McCain had real answers and Obama said the same thing over and over again. It must be tough not to have a teleprompter readily available.
Where Amy?
Give me some examples. Or are you going to be like McCain and conveniently forget the details?
Which debate were you watching, Amy? Because it WASN'T the one everyone else saw tonight. Try to del with reality, would you?
Have you seen that amazing investigative article by Vietnam reporter Sidney Schanberg?! He shows how McCain actually worked to suppress any return to the USA of the 600+ OTHER POWs at "Hotel Hanoi" that he left behind--after he "confessed" to "war crimes" and his confession was b'cast to the other prisoners. What did those men know that McCain wanted suppressed so badly that he let those boys die?! Google the article; it's horrifying that McCain could ever become president!
Astonishing - how come you republican idiots always make the accusation that us proud liberals are or are about to be unemployed? For example, I've been steadily employed for thirty years. Damnit, we work hard, we built this country. You need to shut up.
I for one am tired of making the "CHANGE" and all the big money going to the president and his pals, and John McCain has not convinced me of anything. If anything he scares me, has he ever heard of the phrase "keep you friends close and your enemies closer"??? By using your brain and keeping ahead of the ppl who are distorted about issues, you then have time to plan your strategy with confidence. Not bombing the heck out of each country you do not agree with. Use your head, does anyone believe in that anymore?????
Barack Obama won this debate. He gave answers as opposed to stories.
Obama can't give any stories because he has NO HISTORY!! He is an empty suit that really has never done anything! He barely has a voting history with all of his "presents"
McCain has a bad history. I think I'll go with the guy that gave real answers.
Mc Cain has been shying away from the real issues but as you say Obama has been tracking down the major problem and possible solution if he is elected.Thats what matters not bunch of stories of past events recounted by Mc Cain.
Interesting how John McCain assumed the "experienced, father, lecturing"figure tonight. He is old, he is a
war monger and we need a change!
yeah so get someone who is a communist. that's the answer. NOT!
Watch out Amy. The Obama campaign is paying $$ to overtake this debate blog with money they should be saving. Obviously, this is not a level headed group.
You are wrong Steven and Amy. McCain didn't show any respect to Obama who, BTW, got more votes in the primaries than may be all the Republican candidates combined. Nobody paid me to see through this, and I am changing for Obama from an independent.
Amy -
Get your politics right - what Obama's accused of is being socialistic, not communistic - they're two separate entities.
McCain could not look at Obama,he acted as if he hated Obama,or just couldnt look at him
Obama was much more confident than McCain. McCain wouldn't even look at him. Obama should have nailed him on some of his half-truths. I'm a veteran, and McCain is no friend of ours. Obama should have brought up the GI Bill and funding for the VA every time McCain acted like he cares about vets.
Tim 576234 - "Obama should have nailed him on some of his half-truths. I'm a veteran, and McCain is no friend of ours."
I know! When the question came up, I was like, " Come on, Barack, you know the answer to this!" "You know this one. McCain voting record on Veterans Benefits! Slam him!" But Barack Obama was too much the gentleman and wouldn't descend to McCain's level
Barack spoke truths. McCain spoke lies. Senator Obama Wins!
Yes this is true about a number of issues, places in the debate where Obama could have nailed with his own comments about McCains lies. At first this bothered and had screaming at the TV -- come on get em get em on that issue, but someone said very well here I rather have someone representing me who is level headed, respectful and knowledgeable , he countered more than enough times with facts. He was constantly listing how he was going to address several issues McCain was just emotional, condiscending, slick in other words lying and telling half truth -- my respect him as a public official who served this conutry with his POW status has diminished IMMENSELY especially since he USED IT! Over and Over again. But this is the same man who voted down taking care of them. I was never for McCain but I did respect him -- NOT ANY MORE. He'll do anything to win, Im glad Barrack won't stoop to his level.
Tim:
You are SO correct ! I sat incredulous that Obama didn't blast McShame for his repeated votes against Vet funding, and make that patent lie of McSame clear for all.
You have to understand the truth of the matter. If you are talking about enlisted Veterans we all know very well how Sen McCain has voted agains the last 7 Veterans Appropriations, opposed and then did not vote for the New G.I. Bill. We know he doesn't love us and we know how little he cares. We are taking the approach of writing letters to the editor, calling T.V. stations and informing other voters of his real record. But the retired officers and their corporate connections with the revolving door between acquistion officers and contractors who service DoD are the funnel of money and dialogue praising Sen McCain. Now its up to the rest of the citizens to pay attention, go on-line and look at the real story and make the truth the deciding factor in this election and not campaign rhetoric. In case you've forgotten the founding fathers were very clear about who was responsible for the conduct of the government and our nation when they used these words to begin the constitution "We the People......" Don't expect Barack Obama to do the work of all of us. Tell your friends and neighbors, volunteer in your neighborhood, find out where the homeless vets are in your town and get involved. If the government won't honor their service take up the slack and do your part as a citizen who has benefitted from their sacrifice. Take personal responsibility for your government and nation. As for me, I'm logging off and heading down to the Obama Campaign Headquarters to see what I can do to help.
You are correct about McCain's voting for veteran's rights. This is the kind of thing about Senator McCain that bothers me, he looked straight into the camera and got emotional about what he would do for the Veterans and he was lyin. He lies about O'Bama's tax plan repeatedly when he knows he is lying again. When President Bush lied about him in South Carolina, I felt sick for him. He is a changed man now, it is win at any cost.
I am a veteran also and you are right, he is no friend of ours. He was against the bill to give veterans getting the GI Bill after they get out of the service. When I heard him speak about how he would take care of veterans I told my wife right then and there that he was lying!
I used to worry that Obama wasn't being tough enough too, but I have a lot of faith that his campaign managers really know what they are doing. There doesn't seem to be any need to stomp McCain into the dirt even if it would be easy to do. I think Obama is giving him a little bit of a free ride because he really does aspire to a higher form of debate and politics. Obama trusts us to inform ourselves and this blog is evidence that most of us do. McCain will lose this election and that will be punishment enough.

Amazing how McCain refused to look Obama in the eye
