Someone wrote that race now takes a backseat to class. That's ridiculous. There have been tension amongst classes for centuries and may continue for centuries more. Racial prejudices, hatred, and supremacy are completely separate issues, as is gender equality issues. In this election we did see people finally realize that voting for a qualified man who happens to Black is not as important as voting for a White person who doesn't share your views and/or is against your best interest. But it took a practical stock market crash and tons of gaffes from the other side in order for many of those "undecideds" to come around to that point. It shouldn't take something like that to "overcome" the color of someone's skin. I declare we've conquered a major step (leap) , but the race issue remains one to be solved.

It seems completely funny to me that all of the financial mess is being blamed on the Republicans.  The President really has very little power without the backing of Congress.  Our Congress places laws in place and the President can either veto or sign them.  If it is vetoed then it goes back to Congress to be "revamped" and then...you get the picture.   I do believe that Gas prices, the financial/credit crisis and sky rocketing prices have all occurred under a Democratic Congress.  Two years ago the financial landscape was great.  People were making money hand over fist.  Then the congressional elections took place...two years later look where we are.  Wonder where we'll be in two more years with a Marxist President and Democratic Congress?  Standing in soup/bread lines I suppose.

Lilly, I couldn't agree with you more. Almost everyone lived in a house and people were actually able to keep more of their money. I know people on these boards don't want to agree, but if you can look back, you were able to keep more money from your paychecks with Bush's tax cuts and there were more jobs available.

Lilly, You sound well-informed.  What, exactly, is the legislation you are referring to?  The ones the democrats passed that have gotten us into this mess - please provide me with the House or Senate bill numbers so I can look them up.  Also, can you explain why President Bush would have signed these bills into law if he didn't think they were a good idea?  After all, as you pointed out, he has the power to veto anything he wants. Democrats in the congress didn't have enough votes to override his veto, since their majority was so small - just 51 to 49 in the senate, and 233 to 202 in the house - not nearly enough for 2/3 majority.

VLF, the answer to your question is yes. 95%-98% of blacks voted for him based on color. Also a portion of whites voted for him so they can use it as their rebuttle when they are called racist. I think that as long as the extremists on both sides are given the media attention, then we will have racial tension. Al Shapton and Jessie Jackson have not done much to heal the country.  Martin Luther King did a tremendous job in trying to get the sides to talk together and his legacy was and is still invoked to bring people together.

That is more important and trying to figure out who is more or less of a racist, isn't it? Talking together and breaking down the barriers.  Look at most schools, kids play together because it is fun.  Only when they are older do they look at something so artificial as skin color and why is that?  Peer pressure, group think?  I believe it is more of the extremist points getting out there and used to keep people apart.

Sorry C-700178, but people across the country were screaming "Obama, Obama!" In one of the comments above someone said, "95% of the Black people that voted, cast their ballot for Obama. This makes it appear that they voted purely based on race." This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. This election crossed racial lines. All the blacks in the country couldn't have elected Obama on their own. There was a tremendous support given by voters of all stripes.

When I was a kid and Eisenhower was running against Stevenson, my schoolmates cheered "Stevenson, Stevenson." Based on your thinking, those kids should have been considered bigoted against bald men?

It seems like the real problem at that school is discipline & respect. If systems have not been put into place to let students know what expectations for appropriate behavior with the faculty are, then they will act out and be disrespectful, as many teens lack self-control.

It also sounds like the adminstration could be doing more to support her as a teacher. If a student got "in my face" they would be "in the office" and with complete support of my prinicipal! Children need to be taught how to behave and what is considered right - that is part of the job that has been handed down to teachers. Regardless of what goes on at home, when a student is at school there should be rules, just like if it were a job site; they wouldn't be able to do that to a boss and not expect to get fired, so why let them think it is okay because you are afraid that standing up for decency with be interpreted as rascism?

Teaching basic codes of courtesy and respect for authority is not wrong in any way regardless of what color face the words come out of. Standing up for YOUR rights is okay and harrassment in the workplace is illegal, so you have more to stand on than they do, but I would hope that more community building and purposeful teaching of school-wide values could be explored before the attorneys were called in, ya know? Someone wrote about the grassroots aspect of Obama's campaign - well, grassroots needs to happen in all our communities to educate locally, and create bridges of communication and understanding around our "sameness" before the differences become less noticeable, by them and you.

I think that you are being a little ridiculous. This teacher is telling us what she has experienced. I can also tell you that she is not the only one. My mother-in-law works at a school in texas where she witnessed two children walk into there classroom and tell their fellow classmates the they "better watch out cause we got the power now". These are elementary school children who have no clue about politics, all they know is what is observed at home, so they regurgitate it as knowledge. Race is not being made an issue by the voters of the loosing party. I personally do not give a crap about the color of my new Commander-in-Chief, only that he makes good sound decisions that will not only affect me but the rest of this nation. I do not think that the race relations will improve under Obama, not that he won't try, but it's the rest of the country that will impede the change. As long as African Americans continue to feel that white people feel superior because of the color of their skin, it will not change. Everyone regardless of skin color is going to have to make an effort to rid the country of this problem. And pointing fingers at the other race is not going to solve this problem!

We've had over 200 years to vote for people that looked like us.  We voted them in 100% of the time.  The election years where people of different color or gender ran, we did not vote for them in sufficient numbers to put them in the White house.  Barack was the better of the two candidates by far and yet he won by just a few percentage points.  Do not begrudge people their choice for president because some may have voted for him based on race.  A larger majority didn't vote for him because of it.  I would love to see the day when race and gender were not considerations when voting for the best qualified person but i can not realistically believe we will ever get to that point.  It's easy to see with posts like yours that we are destined to have troubles for a long time to come.

To say that african americans voted for President Elect Obama, only because of race is to limit your view of the election.  First, the african american population of the country is only about 13% so there are not enough to win an election.  Second, President Elect Obamas policies were far superior to those of Senator McCain.  Finally, did it at all occur to you that in addition to having better policies, many african americans could relate to President Elect Obama better than they could to Senator McCain (the 'relate to' argument is frequently used as a rationalle to explain voting for Bush or Gov. Palin, so it works both ways).

Let me settle this here and now...a black man could not be voted in on race...there are simply not enough black voters to do that.  So the conclusion is...he was voted in because he was the better candidate!  Without the white vote he couldn't be voted in...look at the #'s people...it is statistically impossible for a black man to be voted in by blacks alone!

This was not about blacks voting in a black man.  95% of blacks voted for Obama while 48% of whites voted for Obama.  If race was not an issue it would not have been an issue for whites or blacks.  You can fairly assume that the black voters based their decision on race rather than the issues.  If they would have based their decisionon the issues, the precentage would have been in line with the rest of the country and closer to 55%, but 95% is extreme.  That is what you call an outlier in statistical terms.  Outliers are usually skews the results because it was not an accurate measurement or there was a variable that should not impact that data.

I don't quite understand the logic when people say it is racist when black americans vote for a black candidate but it is not racist when white americans vote for a white candidate. I agree. There are so many people that are race conscious, it's astounding. That's why I don't think Obama's win is going to change or help race relations. A friend told me about a woman who I believe was 109 yrs. old , voted the first time because Obama is black. We need to vote based on what the person plans and views that are good for our country, not the color of their skin. I think that is the most ignorant reason to vote for somebody.

i am talking about what things like what T Lane said above.  Blacks dont seem to know how to act now that we are going to have a black president.  In my town a group of 200 Blacks started rioting when it was announced that Obama had won.  When the police showed up to break it up they started throwing bottles at the police and 7 were arrested.  I am quit sure this isnt the only incident of this across the USA.  I am a Democrat and dont have any problems with Obama's policies.  I hope our economic situation improves and believe it will.  I do question his associations with known terrorists and his ability to lead this country.  As far as being Equal, you are correct, Blacks arent treated equal in this country.  They are given more of a chance than whites.  If you want to be treated equal then we should do away with all of the Black organizations such as the NAACP and the United Negro College Fund.  If whites had the organizations you would call it racist.  Shouldn't the shoe fit on the other foot.

Yes!  Chicago is horrible.  I lived here all my life.  It's always been segregated but now, it's going to be worse b/c it already is.  When Obama won, black people were walking down the street saying "look at you, you mad b/c a black man is president",  " how does it feel to have a black man for president"

Wake up Liberals.  MOST (I won't say all) black people voted for Obama b/c he's black.  This is just 'how it is' and 'how it will always be' 

I am a hispanic woman who grew up in the inner city of Chicago and still live in the City of Chicago.  All the racism I have experienced towards me personally as a Mexican American were from Black people.  The people who are always crying about racism toward them.

you are seriously diluted if you think that just because Obama is the new President that things will be better. The current Admin did all it could for the military family. for example 8 years of steady pay raises, the new gi bill, increase in BAH, increase in BAS, the increase of tuition assistance, the list continues. If you think that it is realistic that all the troops will come home rapidly and not have to worry about more deployments, then you need a wake up call. Semper Fi!!!!!!!

I agree with you. I did not vote against Obama because of his skin color. I voted against him because of the content of his character. I can tell you openly if I were serving in the military of this country on the day president elect Obama is sworn into office I would resign, retire or go awol permanently before  I would take orders from a person who has, by his very own statments, shown his loathing for this country and what it stand fors. I would refuse to do that. If this nation is so bad then my question is why he did not run for Premier of Iraq or Iran or some place like that since he, once again by his own words, thinks this country is so bad.

There have been some rumors spreading around that Obama was not actually born in Hawaii, but in Indonesia or Kenya.  Whether or not these rumors are true, we may soon find out.  Apparently, some people are waiting for Obama's personal records to be released which are supposed to reveal his true birthplace--which, yes, could make a difference.  But really though, if he was born elsewhere, don't you think someone would have already made a fake birth certificate?  Kind of like the Chinese gymnastic troupe this year at the olympics.  Yeah, I'm sure they were all 16!  Fake id's aren't too difficult to make these days, I'm sure.

Umm...Obama was born in Hawaii, while McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone.  Which is a more a part of the United States of America? 

Oh come on folks!  Maybe Obama won because he was the better candidate, had a knowlegable running mate. ran a better campaign(not base on fear). and excited the youth vote.  Remember most of the under 35 crowd has attended integrated schools, worked in an integrated workplace and, are use to seeing integrated families in public.  The point is the younger folks are not as bigoted as their parents.  Face it, whether you like it or not this country is going to catch up to the rest of the world.
